HUMANISTIC & RELATIONAL APPROACHES
Healing the Space Between You
Our humanistic approaches honor the emotional world of each partner and the unique relationship you've built together, creating conditions for genuine understanding and renewed connection.
PERSON-CENTERED APPROACH
Mutual Empathy & Acceptance
In couples work, Person-Centered principles create a session environment where both partners feel genuinely seen and heard — not just by the therapist, but by each other. Rather than adjudicating who is "right," your therapist helps each of you feel safe enough to speak honestly and listen openly.
This approach is foundational to all couples work we do: it establishes the safety and trust that makes deeper change possible. When each partner feels fully accepted without fear of judgment, the walls that protect old wounds can begin to soften.
EXISTENTIAL & MEANING-FOCUSED
What Does This Relationship Mean?
Existential therapy in couples work invites partners to explore deeper questions together: What values do we share? What kind of relationship do we want to build? How does our history inform who we've become to each other?
This approach is especially useful when couples feel disconnected from the sense of meaning or purpose in their relationship — going through the motions, feeling like roommates, or struggling to articulate what's missing. It helps partners reconnect with the deeper "why" of their commitment to each other.
EMOTIONALLY FOCUSED THERAPY · EFT
Transforming Emotional Bonds
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, is one of the most well-researched and effective approaches for couples therapy available today. EFT is grounded in attachment theory — the understanding that human beings are wired for emotional connection, and that much of what drives conflict in relationships is an underlying fear of losing that bond.
At the heart of EFT is the recognition that beneath anger, withdrawal, criticism, or emotional shutdown, there is almost always a deep longing for closeness, reassurance, and security. EFT helps couples identify the negative cycles they get caught in — the pursuer and the withdrawer, the escalating argument that always ends the same way — and understand these patterns as signals of unmet emotional needs rather than character flaws or incompatibility.
